What is a typical day of the Instructional Passage like?

Each day, crewmembers assume new roles, switching from captain to cook to navigator to engineer, typically. The instructor conducts a class, usually in the morning, on topics such as sail trim, maneuvers, crew recovery, reefing, heaving to, weather and navigation. Throughout the day and night, crewmembers stand watch, sometimes in pairs, as the instructor deems appropriate. All hands may be needed at times, even in the middle of the night, to participate in boat handling.

The ocean-voyager's days vary with the weather. Some can be quite challenging, especially when it's rough. Rough weather is always a possibility. It can cause seasickness, make it difficult to get quality rest, and may require more frequent sail changes. Some of the most unforgettable moments are of cold, wet, miserable night watches. Other days are quite relaxing with plenty of time to read, socialize or take in the sun. A fresh dorado or dolphins on the bow bring smiles all around.
